Benefits Of Hyaluronic Acid On Skin

If you’re like us and constantly on the lookout for the latest tips in health and beauty, you’ve probably heard a lot about Hyaluronic Acid recently. It seems to appear in many of the new products being developed by skin care leaders. So of course, we had to ask;

What is it and why all the sudden attention?

The Science

Surprisingly enough, Hyaluronic acid (H.A.), is not foreign to the body at all but is a naturally occurring compound found in your cells. It is most commonly found in joint tissue and fluids but also appears in the eyes and skin. Its plays many roles in the body and has been found to stimulate collagen production, maintain skin elasticity, improve hydration, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Hydration

Perhaps its most vital function is as a lubricant or cushioning agent. Due to its polarity (attraction toward a particular object or in a specific direction), Hyaluronic Acid attracts water -another polar molecule- just like a magnet would.

This accounts for the enormous capacity it has to hold water. In fact, just a single molecule of Hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it ideal for use in skin moisturizers. Talk about a product carrying its weight! This is why the result of Hyaluronic acid treatment leaves your skin looking softer, firmer and restores natural radiance by reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Prevention and Renewal

Add to this its powerful antioxidant properties which work to replenish and renew skin from the inside out while combating further damage due to sun exposure or other environmental factors, and we quickly begin to understand what all the hype is about!

Laboratory testing has demonstrated that application of Hyaluronic acid to cells prohibits the oxidative degradation of lipids (fatty acids) caused by free radicals, which results in cell damage. This not only protects the cells themselves but also acts as a diffusion barrier.

Composed primarily of H.A., this barrier prevents certain molecules from crossing the cell membrane while simultaneously assisting the removal of waste matter from cells. This creates a stable environment between cells which prevents the dissolution of vital nutrients and youth-enhancing compounds while allowing for the preservation of vital collagen fibers.

Recognized as a prime factor in the maintenance of tissue fullness, collagen is also vital to a youthful, healthy-looking complexion.

Anti-Aging

The problem lies in the fact that like many of the body’s substances, particularly those responsible for a fresh and vibrant appearance, the Hyaluronic Acid content of cells begins to deteriorate as we get older. Without sufficient quantity of Hyaluronic acid in the body to protect cells, natural degeneration is accelerated and more pronounced signs of aging begin to appear.

This is when incorporating Hyaluronic acid treatment to a skin care routine becomes imperative.  Applied topically, H.A. is absorbed deep into the skin’s layers where it attracts and holds moisture filling in facial tissues, giving the appearance of a more plump and supple complexion while smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

So, it makes sense that where one wishes to combat the signs of aging brought on by the ever-advancing press of time, it becomes necessary to take action and look to external resources such as the application of known beauty enhancers.

Hyaluronic Acid is a superstar among such enhancers and is now being recognized as a foremost ingredient in the world of beauty and skin care. And, since it’s an integral part of the human body already, the risk of sensitivity or allergic reaction to Hyaluronic acid is considered to be low.

Applications

Early researchers discovered that Hyaluronic acid plays a crucial role in cell metabolism as well as in the physiological processes involved with tissue renewal and repair.

Based on these findings, in the 1960s, product developers began to incorporate Hyaluronic acid into specific treatments directed at handling skin lesions. Then in the 1980s, H.A. began to be used in cataract removal procedures, to treat glaucoma and to increase the rate of healing post-surgery. It was also administered as an injectable, primarily to treat various joint impairments. It wasn’t until the 90’s however that H.A. began to be known in cosmetic circles where it quickly gained in popularity as one of the best products used to reverse the signs of aging.

It used to be that the full cosmetic benefits of Hyaluronic acid could only be obtained through injections as the particles themselves were too large to penetrate deep into the skin when applied topically.

Some aestheticians or dermatologists would break open a vial of Hyaluronic Acid intended for injections and use their hands to apply it to skin. This was a lengthy treatment however as it was normally left on for hours to be absorbed as much as possible and typically only after more invasive procedures had already opened up the skin, literally, using methods like Micro-needling or Fraxel laser treatments.

More recently however, experts have been able to break down this miracle beauty-booster into smaller molecules which are then able to penetrate deeper into the skin, where it can draw in more moisture, increase skin volume from the inside out and generally rejuvenate the appearance of skin. This refinement has been termed “Low molecular weight” Hyaluronic acid.

This preparation is gentle enough to be suitable for all skin types and can be used for oily, dry, sensitive or acne-prone skin. Hyaluronic acid even has soothing properties shown to ease the inflammation associated with conditions like eczema and rosacea.

After using the product ourselves, carefully reviewing the facts and studying results, we are thoroughly convinced. Hyaluronic acid is indeed what many have been looking for!
